Any industry relies on Role Models for others to look to; for direction and inspiration, the building industry is no different.
We are proud to present and salute the following Role Models; each of these inspiring ladies demonstrate skill and knowledge in their chosen fields, within the following categories;
Each of the ladies in our Design Team were integral participants, from contracting to purchase the block of land, handling the conveyancing, drawing up plans that met all of the criteria outlined in the design brief- to designing our Logo as "representative of women in building retaining their femininity" and the very website we have dedicated to this National first project. We profile each of these skillfull women to gain an insight into their chosen careers. Of course there is one man, John Hill, who is our project certifier- this indicates that certification is an area that women have not yet fully tapped into.

Not so much as obstacles but cases of mistaken identity on site. I’ve been mistaken for the real estate agent, a curtain lady (why a timber frame under construction would be ready for a window measure up is a mystery to me!), the interior decorator and the list goes on so now I always wear a company shirt on site – easier for everyone that way although it doesn’t always stop the quizzical looks!!

Embrace change and be willing to ‘adapt and overcome’!

When I graduated engineering was a field that traditionally had a poor retention of women in the workplace. Now with the skills shortage and the current economic climate the industry has changed. Employers now offer more flexibility in the workplace which is more conducive to family life.

My primary goal is to maintain a good work and family life balance. My other goal is to do voluntary aid work either overseas or in remote Australian communities in an engineering capacity.

Be myself and don’t put up with any rubbish. Sometimes this means walking away from a conversation I don’t want to be a part of.

I have been inspired by a lot of ‘ordinary’ Australians doing extraordinary things.

Respect on the job is something that is earned through hard work and experience. Be a part of the Building industry because you want to be and not because you are trying to prove a point. |
