Welcome to our dedicated website for the

"Buildmore Women into Building Housing Showcase".

    women_into_building

I am Sam Sheppard, the licensed builder behind this National first initiative; a small lot home designed, constructed and supplied predominantly by women. Without a doubt this has become a career highlight for me, inspired by a conversation between Carey DeBoer from Totally Workwear and Radmilla Desic, Queensland President for NAWIC. The suggestion was put to me and I thought it was fantastic but extremely ambitious, let’s face it, to cover all vocations and trades, women may be few and far between. Read more

Top Gong at Urban Institute of Development WID 2010 Excellence Awards

On June 25th 2010 The Buildmore Group was announced winner of the Workplace Award which recognises outstanding performance of a workplace in supporting and encouraging female staff through the development of company culture and polices.

UDIA Queensland President, Warren Harris acknowledges ‘a truly outstanding example of the potential for cultural and generational change in approaches to workplaces in the industry. The impact of this project is extensive, providing opportunities for students in schools, tafes and colleges, through to designers, trades people, suppliers and industry partners. Working to promote the industry as a positive career destination for women, the Buildmore Women into Building Housing Showcase is to be recognized for the important role it has played in bringing about fundamental and effective change, and is truly deserving of this award'.

Ms Sheppard said, "There are so many people who will share in the pride of being involved in this fundamentally important initiative that has now been recognised for this highly regarded UDIA WID award".

The UDIA executive judging panel felt that Ms Sheppard's own contribution, commitment, enthusiasm and achievements shouldn't go unrecognized;  Ms Sheppard was presented with an exclusive award for ‘Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in a Mentoring Role'.

"When the Judges noted that they were presenting an extra award this year because the contribution of one particular person should not go unnoticed, I was stunned to hear that it was me. You don't expect to receive recognition through an award that didn't exist, so I feel very privileged that UDIA saw fit to note the importance that mentoring plays between participants in nontraditional roles". Ms Sheppard said.

Adrienne Smith, UDIA Sunshine Coast Branch Manager added ‘Sam's achievements to date have been remarkable and this was reflected in the special award that was presented to her during the evening'.

The WIB Initiative is gaining momentum with a National tour planned for later this year to disseminate the key message across the broader industry, education and career spheres. A similar project is currently under consideration in another state.

Our Point of difference

The Builder behind the "Buildmore Women into Building Housing Showcase" knew that to successfully set and industry benchmark there had to be more depth to this national first initiative than it being designed and built predominately by women.

The design brief was set to deliver a small lot housing project with a 12 metre frontage with the Garage located at the rear. Expanded polystyrene external walls, solar hot water and a Photovoltaic grid that reduces the homes needs for external energy sources down to zero; were essetential elements. Adding to this; the use of Cbus complete home automation, zero VOC paints and cabinetry solid tops along with sound sediment control and waste minimisation best practice; ensured that this high profile project truely sets an example for efficient living with environmental accountability. On display from April 2010 for two years this 6.5 star inspirational project exemplifies the importance of responding to current influences."
